It neighbours the districts of Abbaseya and Sakakini. El Zaher is named after al-Malik al-Zahir Rukn al-Din Baibars al-Bunduqdari, who was a Mamluk Sultan of Egypt and Syria, whose memoirs were recorded in the a long Arabic folkloric tale Sirat al-Zahir Baibars.
